Resuspension and oxygen uptake of sediments in combined sewers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Combined sewer sediment properties were studied in small-scale laboratory ̄umes. Physical and biological characteristics of freshly remoulded sediment beds and beds undisturbed for 1±4 days were examined. When sediment beds were incubated for 1±2 days, the beds became covered with bio®lm and the bed volumes increased by 20±40% due to the formation of methane-®lled cavities. The bed strength decreased with increasing incubation time. The oxygen uptake rates of bio®lm-covered sediment beds were on average ®ve times higher than those for bio®lm-free beds. Nutrient (P, N) dynamics in the southwestern Kattegat, Scandinavia: sedimentation and resuspension effects
The yearly nutrient supply from land and atmosphere to the study area in SW Kattegat is 10 900 tons of N and 365 tons of P. This is only few percent of the supply from adjacent marine areas, as the yearly transport through the study area is 218 000 tons of N and 18 250 tons of P. Yearly net deposition makes up 1340 tons of N (on average 2.5 g m yr) and 477 ton of P (on average 0.9 g m yr). Shal...
متن کاملSediment resuspension over a continental shelf during Hurricanes Edouard and Hortense
The present comprehensive physical and optical measurements have captured sediment resuspension associated with two hurricanes, Edouard and Hortense, that passed over the Coastal Mixing and Optics study site in the fall of 1996. Sediment resuspension associated with Hurricane Edouard was forced by combined current and wave processes. Combined current-wave bottom shear stresses exceeded 3.5 dyn ...
متن کاملADAPTIVE NEURO-FUZZY INFERENCE SYSTEM OPTIMIZATION USING PSO FOR PREDICTING SEDIMENT TRANSPORT IN SEWERS
The flow in sewers is a complete three phase flow (air, water and sediment). The mechanism of sediment transport in sewers is very important. In other words, the passing flow must able to wash deposited sediments and the design should be done in an economic and optimized way. In this study, the sediment transport process in sewers is simulated using a hybrid model. In other words, using the Ada...
متن کاملBiodegradability of organic matter associated with sewer sediments during first flush.
The high pollution load in wastewater at the beginning of a rain event is commonly known to originate from the erosion of sewer sediments due to the increased flow rate under storm weather conditions. It is essential to characterize the biodegradability of organic matter during a storm event in order to quantify the effect it can have further downstream to the receiving water via discharges fro...
متن کاملAnaerobic Wastewater Treatment
The fermentation process in which organic material is degraded and biogas (composed of mainly methane and carbon dioxide) is produced, is referred to as anaerobic digestion. Anaerobic digestion processes occur in many places where organic material is available and redox potential is low (zero oxygen). This is typically the case in stomachs of ruminants, in marshes, sediments of lakes and ditche...
